An automaker’s journey: From legacy to scalable, intelligent platforms

About the client

Atos’ client is a leading French multinational automaker, dedicated to giving its customers the freedom to choose the way they move, embracing the latest technologies and creating value for all its stakeholders.

At a glance

The automaker appointed Atos to modernize the legacy applications in its Financial Services arm using a development and modernization module of Atos Polaris AI. The Atos team designed and implemented 50 new complex interfaces and delivered a high-performance system.

Outcomes

  • 40% cost reduction
  • ~50% faster time to delivery
  • Up to 30% increase in developer productivity
  • 25% increase in user base YoY
  • Enhanced end user experience with automated processes and increased efficiency

Challenges

Declining skillsets. Declining systems

The French multinational automaker's financial services arm was keen to replace its legacy systems with a modernized one as it was in fear of its financial services portfolio becoming inoperative. This would lead to competitive pressures from the market too. Declining skillsets due to legacy Uniface low-code applications also posed another key challenge.

The client appointed Atos to modernize more than 200 applications and move to cloud in an effort to reduce cost and improve its time to market. The legacy application landscape required complex interfaces to be designed, which was a bottleneck for faster rollouts and compliance across multiple countries.

Solution

Pivoting for change

Atos needed to enable an ageing application portfolio for global rollouts to support modernization. Leveraging the proprietary Atos Polaris AI platform for Development and Modernization modules, the Atos team accelerated feature development and enabled smooth transitions from legacy Uniface applications to modern cloud-native architectures. This approach streamlined documentation and understanding the complex legacy systems. It also generated robust test cases and boosted developer productivity by 30%.

Additionally, a scalable Software Factory model was established to provide agile development, integration testing, and validation services. The factory model supports the development-heavy portfolio, enabling faster delivery cycles and better control over quality and compliance.

The rollout of after-sales supply chain enhancements included a deep review of logistics processes, which required industry expertise and the creation of over 200 high-performance interfaces.

Results

With the modernized application landscape deployed across its financial department, the group has seen the following changes:

  • Enhanced customer satisfaction with the new user interface and faster performance
  • Process efficiency and resilience
  • Improved time to market
  • Increase in profit margins and revenue
